Welcome to Information Design Summer 2011


This course offers an introduction to information design, providing strategies for the visualization of complex information as well as the history of these practices. 

The class is useful to designers as well as individuals in scientific fields who are looking to bring focus to information for promoting, advocating, organizing, or educating the public. Class is open to students in all disciplines and majors going into their junior year or above. Suggested disciplines: Art, Graphic Design, Architecture, Urban Planning, Biological Sciences, Astronomy, and Digital Arts & Culture.

The semester will comprise of weekly readings and reading responses, hands-on information discussion, group exercises, field trips, guest lecturers, and a final project with writing component. 

It is best to think of this class as a design studio where iterative process generating creative insight, intellectual rigour, and clarity of communication are the main focus. Risk-taking and productive criticism are central to this method. As critical members of the studio, students’ thorough preparation for each class session is assumed—each student will be prepared to lead discussions or pose inquiries.
